The main portion of the collection consists of the correspondence of Frank G. Ruffin, chiefly relating to his post-Civil War life, including his political career, agricultural pursuits, ties with the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and his memoirs of the Civil War. There are a few items of Edmund Ruffin, including a petition from the United Agricultural Societies of Virginia to Congress protesting "wild speculations" of the Friends of National Industry (1820).
